The collapse of the wave function is not random, but there's something deeper going on. The idea was that when I wrote a book about neurobiology it would show how you could have quantum coherence at the level needed. Stuart Hammeroff told me these structures might be more relevant to your concerns than just neuro-on nerve propagation. And so he came off to Oxford and we got together and tried to make sense of what each other was talking about.
Sir Roger Penrose has had a remarkable life. He has contributed an enormous amount to our understanding of general relativity, perhaps more than anyone since Einstein himself -- Penrose diagrams, singularity theorems, the Penrose process, cosmic censorship, and the list goes on. He has made important contributions to mathematics, including such fun ideas as the Penrose triangle and aperiodic tilings.
