Turkey's Transition to a European Member State

Turkey has drifted definitively away from the European Union, at least its previous status as a candidate for joining the EU. I wonder were there other alternatives between the sort of stark black and white, non-European country versus European member state for Turkey? You know, if we assume that full membership was always going to be a stretch, what else might Turkey look like under those alternative circumstances?
