Boris Johnson was the last Tory PM to have actually won a general election. So in that sense he has the legitimacy to continue to serve without having to go to the country and say, look, I haven't really approved of me. But when their direct debits start going out for next month's mortgages it will be very difficult to explain to the electorate. Boris Johnson will want to come back in five or ten years time as the savior of the Tory party that can lead them to victory again. This is entirely bogus.
