Tsai Ing-Wen's New Southbound Policy

Since she became president, Hye Ing-wen has put a great deal of effort into boosting Taiwan's international standing. This is in spite of the potent efforts of the PRC to isolate Taiwan and break the will of any sovereign state wishing to carry out official or even unofficial relations with the ROC. She's also trying to lessen Taiwan's reliance on nuclear energy, which stands at about 15-16 percent of power generation on the island. On May 24, 2019, a constitutional court ruled same-sex marriages were legal.
