The child has this tremendous direct, unmediated access to a mother and the mother is not fungible. You have an organic connection to your mother because as Barbara Johnson put it, your mother is the first place you've ever been. At a certain point though, that dyadic relationship is going to be interrupted by necessity of the fact that mom needs to sleep or have a job. The father is necessary, but as everyone from Freud to the great and great comedians to Shakespeare would note, whereas the mother is always obvious, the dad is not,. Right?
