Hypoxemia - What Are the Effectors of Hypoxia?
Breathing is one of those very basic core components of life and we've evolved to have fairly narrow controls over those variables largely O2 and CO2. We don't tend to have to deal with hypoxia unless we fall into a pool or we run up a mountain or we exercise extremely. Most of our moment to moment variation in ventilation is a function of our CO2 concentration. But we do have very potent peripheral chemo receptor responses to hypoxemia, which are not centrally located. They're actually peripherally located in the choroided sinus and the chor avoided body.
