After 18 70 or so they went into decline, mainly because the countryside in eastern europe went into depression. Some of these courts with their dynasties of rebes just died out and they closed up. For example, in crown heights in brooklyn, the main group is habad. And then there are towns and neighborhoods around the new york area where there are satmar hacitic communities. The asitism lived offut. It depended on ashanas jewish folk life. So they became conservators of tradition.
