CHAPTER

The History of the Mongolia Brothers

The concept of filling a lightweight container with hot air or another gas to make it float dates back to at least 3rd century BCE in China. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay were all in France when the Mongolia Brothers balloon made its first untethered flight carrying human passengers on November 21st 1783. The lanterns are often used in festivals and other celebrations, but they were originally for military signaling. They're usually made of paper and open at the bottom with a candle or other flammable material suspended underneath.
