Coca-Cola: A Funny Smell

In 1999, children at a Belgian school started to feel unwell after drinking Coca-Cola. Investigators later analysed the Coke and found it had been contaminated by two gases that smell like rotten eggs. The gas that makes fizzy drinks fizzy is carbon dioxide but in bottles from this batch of drinks was carbonyl sulfide and hydrogen sulfide. These are gases that can make you ill in large quantities - although investigators didn't find large quantities.
