History of Philosophy: India, Africana, China

CHAPTER

The Sutras of Charvaka and Jayanta

Charvaka rejected arguments that inferred a separate self from its apparent function in our mental lives. They are fully committed to the reality of such an enduring mind, it's just that they believe it emerges from and depends on the body. His position is thus one that resonates powerfully with those taken by most modern day philosophers of mind. But we should not underestimate our first motivation for doing the history of philosophy. We want to explore more deeply the ancient Indian psychological theories we've covered so far. That will be the topic of an upcoming conversation with Moneema Chaddha.
