There were political reasons for smearing Gile de Ray as a pedophilic child murderer. The Hundred Years War wasn't over just yet by the time Gile went on trial. Joan of Arc was still considered a heretic by some, especially even some in France. And Charles VII had been crowned king, but he was still a little wobbly. Therefore, if Gile were to be found guilty, it could be said that King Charles VII owed his throne to the heretic Joan of Arc and the Black Magician child murderer Gile De Ray.
