In the 1980s, under Reagan and Thatcher, conservatism stood for a series of things such as small government. In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem: it's the problem. The old conservatism has been replaced by a new and much more unstable sort of conservatism. There's all to do with the nation-state, national conservatism, tapping into cultural resentments.
