How to Soften Your English
Modal verbs are a big part of softening your English. When we add a modal verb to a sentence, we can turn maybe a direct request or a suggestion into something that is more polite. The invoice has to be paid by Friday? We need to be more direct in that context. But if we're talking about a general business interactions, then being less direct is a good thing when it's appropriate.
