It should be clear that it is possible to gain strength in other ways independent of muscle mass changes. And you may and if it wasn't a cross sectional thing, then you may be looking at hyper responders. I would agree with you that there the correlation is strong, the causation I'm less certain on. If your training's going well and it's well suited to your goals, that's probably more predictive than any small changes in lean body mass.
