Guijardini was less confident than Machiavelli that one can apply the lessons of history to predict the future. Experience shows that almost always the opposite happens to what men, no matter how wise, expected. What history provides from Guijardini's point of view is not so much models to imitate as a wealth of experience on which to draw.
