The Territories of Judah

The southern kingdom Judah alone survived exile. The northern kingdom was exiled by the Assyrians around 722 BCE, never to be heard from again. In Genesis 49, these are Jacob's last words to his sons: "I will die soon" So it is very important indeed that they commit themselves to obeying the covenant. That's what the law of Moses is for this writer.
