In the main lab, chamkur is testing every knut and bolt that the detector will be built of. Annoyingly, it turns out that almost everything is a little bit radioactive. Radiation mimics the dark matter flash of light scientists are hoping to see. That means everything in the detector has to be clean. The materials have to omit no radiation.
