I think that was like a delayed trauma response and it was also a manifestation of my parents doing an incredibly good job at not letting the troubles come into our house. I think one of the things maybe all parents need to do is they need to protect their children from the truth sometimes. There's some truths that you need to be titrated or diluted or held back until a time when the child is more ready for it. My parents certainly didn't tell us how bad things were and the experiences they directly were having. So it wasn't so much that the troubles didn't leave me feeling unsafe until later on.
