Introduction
In this episode, we look at the value proposition of hosting the Olympics in the World Cup. In 2008, China put on perhaps the greatest show and celebration of sport we've ever seen as the country hosted the Summer Olympics. Just days later, Russia invaded its neighboring Georgia. Fast forward more than 13 years, China hosted the Olympics again. This time for the Winter Olympics, instead of a profound celebration, China rolled out a dystopian backdrop that created a dirtier view of the country. And again, Russia displayed acts of war by invading another sovereign country, this time Ukraine, under the blanket of national pride and distraction provided by the Olympics.
