The Collapse of Complex Societies
In his 1988 monograph, the Collapse of Complex Societies, Joseph Tainter posited a holistic theory that could be applied to the fall of Rome. He argues that Rome's collapse was not caused by external factors, such as invasions, but rather by the unsustainable nature of its own internal systems of organization and governance. As the Roman Empire expanded, it became increasingly complex and required greater resources to maintain while at the same time facing diminishing returns on investment. And this led to a point where the costs of maintaining the empire outweighed the benefits, and the society collapsed as a result.
