An egyptian young assistant, one of those people who were working with carter, did actually stumble across what turned out to be the first step that led to the entrance. So it is clear that some of the local egyptian workers found the steps first. Let us forget that before 19 22 and the final discovery, carter and his team of workmen had been working away in the valley of the kings for seven years. And the workmen, not carter, had shifted hundreds of thousands of tons of rubble.
