Anatolia and Syria: The Hittites and Their Legacy

The Hittite Imperial Network seems to have been a remarkably thin veneer over the basic social, political, and economic structure of Anatolia. When the usefulness of that Imperial network withered away, it simply disappeared. There were far fewer people living in the region in the centuries after the Bronze Age collapsed than there had been before. The Hittites did leave a legacy, particularly further south, in the form of what are often called the Neo-Hittite states.
