Cathy and Colin Hunter fixed 69 place-the-ball competitions on the newspaper. Cathy bought a new house for her and Eddie in more affluent suburbs of Glasgow. She spent money on holidays, trips to London, and was still able to save a decent amount. Colin too had a large sum in the built society, a new car, and was in the process of buying himself a nice new bungalow when they were caught. Detectives wondered whether Cathy's death could be connected to this fraud.
