How to Pace a Book
The Christmas scenes in JK Rowling's books are a great example of that. You're giving them an anchor point so that when you land in the scene you understand where it is before the action happens. And what you're going for there is that you only want to describe the interesting stuff. If you pause and have one chapter that is entirely about character development rather than plot development then that can help it smooth out a little bit.
