The Spiral Staircase
In 1887, 10 years after the staircase was completed that an artisan named Philip Auguste Hesh added the railing. Safety appears to have been a concern at the outset since there was originally no railing. One 13 year old sister who was among the first to ascend to the loft told how she and her friends were so frightened absent to railing that they came down on hands and knees. Their staircase apparently connected only with wooden pegs has two 360 degree turns.

A group of nuns in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the late 1800s needed a special staircase built for their chapel, so they prayed a novena and a mysterious workman came and built it. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli discuss what makes the spiral staircase special, who built it, and whether it could have been St. Joseph himself.
