CHAPTER

What's the Difference Between a Stop T and a Flap T?

stop T is like one fifth of a true T and a flap T is a D or R. When the T comes after an R before a consonant, you're thinking, hold on. This is a T between two consonants. The point is we don't drop the T. It's a stop. For example, the word partly. Part Lee has RTL three consonants in a row, but we do not drop this T. It is a stop partly. A part meant apartment. Apartment. Department. They can actually both be stops.
