Is Machine Learning Required in Climate Science?

Machine learning is often used for prediction problems, but it can also be used to understand patterns. Why is machine learning required? Why can't a couple of grad students find these patterns? I think that's the hard question, and something i grapple with. We really don't know what we all could find. And i think it's wide open for future research and new graduate ph ds.
