Life in a concentration camp could be called a provisional existence. It was impossible to foresee whether or when, if at all, this form of existence would end. A man who let himself decline because he could not see any future goal found himself occupied with retrospective thoughts. The events and the people outside had a ghostly aspect for the prisoner. Life for such people became meaningless. Only a few were capable of reaching great spiritual heights.
