The Secrets of Beethoven's Great Grandfather
Five men alive today in Belgium with the last name van Beethoven. They're documented as sharing a common patrilineal ancestor. We would have expected them to have identical Y chromosomes. So they would have shared a common Y chromosome, something like 40 to 50,000 years ago. It's during at least one of seven potential conceptions or generations between 1572 and 1770 - we don't know which generation it is.
