Plato says we don't take seriously enough how vulnerable people's psychology is. At the heart of his system is this idea of the noble lie that you tell to the people. The ideal thing would be that the rulers themselves would believe these lies, he writes. It's actually about creating a set of myths if you will which contribute to civic harmony even among the rulers and rules.
