The South Pole group published another study in 2010, trying to be the best standard with the complete clinical response. And TME was shown to decrease local recurrence and also to improve functional outcome. On rectal exam, there should be no irregularities or a flat smooth scar; endoscopic evaluation includes high resolution MRI.
