The Importance of Robert E. Lee in the Civil War
Robert E. Lee could have made the Civil War effectively rumble on in some form, says historian Julian Zelizer. He accepted that the war was over; he didn't splinter his army up to fight a guerrilla struggle like so many revolutionaries today have. "Perhaps we're asking too much of this man who has just lost a major Civil War," writes Zelizer.
