Is It a Tree?

For a really long time, people thought it was an algae. It wasn't until 2001 when a paper was released which suggested based on the morphology of the fossil that this giant spire was actually a fungus. In 2007, this was backed up by a separate paper that concluded that this spire did not photosynthesize. So we thought that it might have been a giant algae structure, basically. But then John William Dawson essentially turned around and denied that he ever considered that it was a tree. Because he was so wrong that he was just like, no, you're- I never said it was a trees. You can't handle the truth.
