96. Gas Lamps of Westminster

London History

00:00

What's the Oldest Gas Lamp?

The first gas lamps in London were put on the Mall in 1807, so there's a long history of them. They're very efficient and tightly controlled with mantel systems that are much more efficient than open flame ones. The council just don't seem to understand this at all - it's not a question of this lamp's 100 years old, this lamp's 200 years old. And then you might actually have the operating system inside, which was only updated 10 years ago or something,. because they've always been telling them. There is one outside of Albany in London; I think Piccadilly also has one. But again, we need to see any. It's incredibly rare.
