The History of Slavery

Rome's founder Romulus gave fathers the right to sell their children into slavery for financial gain. Slavery had existed since the birth of Rome, but it saw an immense boom during a period called the Punic Wars. By the end of the first century BC, there were up to 2 million slaves - about 20-30% of the Italian peninsula. Many believed that in order to have freedom, there must also be the opposite, slavery.
