Humanism began with the explicit assertion that it merely describes our political, social, and private decision making. Yet it was implicitly constituted as a normative project. What it presented as a description of human volunteerism in fact had to displace a very different form of human self-understanding experience. In effect, liberal theory sought to educate people to think differently about themselves and their relationships.
