Mauritians Take to the Streets in Their Thousands

Kaya pioneered a new genre called segue, fusing reggae and traditional music from Mauritius. He chose his stage name as an homage to Bob Marley's album Kaya. The police said he died in a prison cell but many felt that there was more to this story. African Creoles felt discriminated against by Indians who dominated Mauritian politics,. the economy and the police force.
