Spartacus has been a popular figure since the Enlightenment. He was picked up by Marxists, of communists and labor unions in the working class. Kirk Douglas is feeling rather sad at this point in time in the 1950s because he was really keen to play the character of Ben Hur. If it hadn't been for his disappointment, Spartacus may never have come about.
