Swimming for these children gave them also a lot of welcome relief from the traumas they suffered and something that they did by way of recreation activity. To keep the water clean, Amjad had to keep refilling the pool with a pump. But since Garza's only power plant had been bombed, there had been lots of power cuts, so the process was taking twice as long as it should have done. And not many parents could afford to pay for their children's lessons. At the end of each season, I was hit with a massive bill that I could not afford.
