In the summer of 1979 when Chandler was 38 years old he met a guy by the name of Everett Jazmer who was a drag racer and also a fan of trucks. The Los Angeles Times interviews the couple and Marilyn Chandler says when we go out at night it looks like lightning because so many people are taking flash pictures. So there was a circuit you know and this was relatively somewhat to some degree burgeoning kind of thing. It wasn't getting the same level of recognition that say like a NASCAR would be getting.
