The Effects of Losing Social Security Benefits
The way that welfare reform tried to restrict s s i benefits is by requiring social security to review the eligibility of all children who received s s i at the age of 18. This break opened up an opportunity for a study, because it created a treatment group and a control group. And what they found is that when young people are removed from s s i, when they lose welfare benefits, is a very large increase in their criminal justice involvement in adulthood.
