The California Gold Rush

In Our Time

CHAPTER

The Gilded Ages

In 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad is completed to kind of link California with the rest of the United States. The result is that the United States becomes wealthier than before and overtakes Britain as the world's leading industrial power by 1900. It's the Gilded Ages, Mark Twain calls it. And it's gilded in the sense that it's soaked in gold, but it's also a bit fake as well. But any other consequence is actually going to bring in? I think it changed the whole idea of what America was, the hope and the possibility which has always been part of American outlook.
