The Tennis Partner: A Medical Resident Addiction
I didn't quite know the extent of addiction amongst doctors until I had this very personal experience with David, who was my medical student. He told me his past history of addiction, intravenous cocaine, and then he relapsed. In learning about him, I visited a center that cares for physicians with addiction. And I learned how common this phenomenon was. The only good news is that when a physician is addicted they have a tremendous incentive to get sober because you don't get your license back unless you do. Not true of many other professions in which people struggle with the same issue but nobody really holds them to doing it.
