Sir Ian Chalmers co-founded the Cochrane Collaboration. He was struck by how much variance there was from doctor to doctor. When he became a doctor himself, Chalmers worked at a refugee camp in Gaza. This led him to embark on a year's long effort to create a centralized body of research.
