Do You Think We're Going to Give Everyone Drugs?
I worry about the idea that we're going to smooth everyone out with drugs and supposedly enable them to focus better. I fear where inhibiting their compensatory mechanisms that actually are at the root of a lot of their skills. One of the things I worry about is that we are training ourselves to be much less focused. So yes, I've become more distractible and I pull out my smartphone in the elevator, but I spent the first really 40 years of my life not doing that. And the other habits of close careful study, I had a long time to develop and let them sink in.
