Introduction

Serena Higgins is a scholar who has published on Charles Williams in our own journal seven. She says he was not an academic by trade, as were many of the other Inklings. He worked his way up from a lowly proofreader at Oxford University Press to become one of the senior editors. So he edited many anthologies and collections and wrote introductions. But then in 1939, he, along with the rest of the staff there in the London office of the Oxford University Press, were evacuated to Oxford. And he and Lewis had already been corresponding for a couple of years.
