Most of the work that I've ever done in my journalist career hasn't been about black stuff, actually. My feeling is that that whole thing about I don't want to be pigeonholed, hands the power to someone else. It's always in the passive voice, what other people will think of you. And I prefer the Steve Biko embrace that I write what I like. So how did you become a journalist? I mean, let's go back to childhood. Your mum came here early 60s. Her idea of kind of what a good course would be was something that you could get a job in. The notion that you could live from writing was kind of quite a distance
