Hair dyeing is an interesting aspect of bureaucratic life in China. It reflects something about the political system and how norms at the very highest level filter down to the lowest level. White hair is a sign that you're no longer a dynamic public official who's caring for the people, but you're one who's being cared for by the public official. Under President Fujintao, each member of the standing committee had veto power over their own policymaking area.
