Is There a Sinister Side to Video?
There's a sense in which it has to involve a certain critique of the medium as well as a kind of embrace of it. I think artists are beholden to acknowledge that, and that they know that the system they are engaging with is producing something enormous significance on a really significant scale. And so there is no neutrality here, I think. But again, an artist I know always says that anyone who would suggest that painting itself is not political, the moment you put a brush to canvas as a political act. So we develop our own critical tools to navigate a world of total immersion in electronic images.
