Wendy Edelberg is a senior fellow at Brookings and Director of the Hamilton Project. She says immigration has always been important in this country, but it took a big hit during the COVID pandemic. The census-revised population statistics don't revise back to pre-pandemic levels so we can't compare today's estimates with previous estimates. Her best guess: We're still as much as 500,000 short of where you would have expected to be in the absence of the pandemic.
